Frequently asked questions

The rental company charged my card weeks after I returned the car. Can they do that?

They can only charge for damage they can prove you caused, and they must substantiate it: condition reports from pickup and return, dated photos, and a real repair invoice. A charge without that paper trail is disputable โ€” start by demanding the full documentation in writing.

What is ECRCS and why does nobody mention it?

The European Car Rental Conciliation Service is a free escalation body for cross-border rentals with the major brands (Sixt, Europcar, Hertz, Avis/Budget, Enterprise and others). Its decisions are binding on the rental company but not on you. Most renters never hear about it โ€” companies are not eager to advertise it.

Should I just do a chargeback?

A credit-card chargeback is a strong tool, but it works best with a documentation trail: demand the repair invoice and inspection reports first, complain formally, then open the chargeback within the card scheme's time limit (typically 120 days from the charge). Don't wait months for the complaint process before contacting your card issuer.

Is the damage waiver at the rental desk worth it?

Desk waivers often cost โ‚ฌ15โ€“30 per day and still carry exclusions. Standalone excess insurance covers the same risk โ€” usually including tyres, glass and undercarriage that desk waivers exclude โ€” for a few euros a day, or one annual policy if you rent more than twice a year.

The charge came with an "administration fee". Is that legal?

Admin fees must be stated in your rental agreement and be proportionate to a real cost. Stacked per-item admin fees (one per damage line or traffic fine) are widely challenged โ€” dispute the fee separately from the underlying charge, and ask them to justify the amount.
