Car hire deposits explained: holds, limits and getting it back
The deposit is a hold on your card for the excess โ the amount you're liable for if the car comes back damaged. Understanding how it works prevents the two classic airport disasters: a declined card at the desk, and a hold that never gets released.
How the hold works
At pickup the desk blocks (not charges) an amount on your card โ typically the excess for the vehicle class, from a few hundred euros at majors to โฌ1,000+ at budget operators when you decline their waiver.
A hold reduces your available limit immediately but never shows as a transaction. It falls away automatically when released โ banks take 3โ15 days after the company releases it, which is why "my deposit is gone" panic is usually just banking lag.
Credit vs debit card at the desk
Most companies require a real credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit; debit cards are often refused for it or accepted only with the desk waiver purchased. Prepaid cards are almost universally refused.
The card also needs enough FREE limit for the hold on top of your holiday spending. A โฌ1,200 hold on a โฌ1,500-limit card ruins trips โ check limits before flying.
When the deposit doesn't come back
First: confirm it was a hold, not a charge โ holds expire on their own; look for an actual debit transaction. If a real charge appeared, that's a damage/fee charge in disguise: demand the documentation and dispute it like any other charge.
If a hold hasn't released after ~3 weeks, ask the rental company in writing for the release confirmation and give it to your bank โ banks can drop a hold early with the merchant's confirmation.
Never pay a surprise damage charge again
