Is car hire excess insurance worth it? The honest math

The rental desk sells peace of mind at โ‚ฌ15โ€“30 a day. A standalone policy sells the same peace of mind for โ‚ฌ3โ€“7 a day. Going bare risks a โ‚ฌ1,000โ€“2,500 excess. Here is the actual decision, without the sales pitch from either side.

The four options, priced honestly

Desk waiver (CDW excess reduction): โ‚ฌ15โ€“30/day, sold at pickup. Convenient โ€” no deposit fight, no reclaim process โ€” but the priciest per day, and it still commonly excludes tyres, glass, undercarriage, keys and misfuelling: the exact things gravel and kerbs actually damage.

Standalone excess insurance: โ‚ฌ3โ€“7/day, or โ‚ฌ40โ€“80/year for annual multi-trip policies. Covers the full excess and usually the desk waiver's exclusions too. The catch: you pay the rental company's charge first, then reclaim from the insurer โ€” you need the cash-flow headroom and the paperwork habit.

Credit card rental cover: some premium cards include it. Check three things before relying on it: that it covers the rental country, that it covers CDW excess (not just liability), and what it excludes โ€” card cover is usually the thinnest of the three.

Going bare: rational only for renters who can shrug off the full excess (typically โ‚ฌ1,000โ€“2,500) as a cost of bad luck.

The break-even is about two trips

One 10-day trip: desk waiver ~โ‚ฌ200 vs standalone ~โ‚ฌ50. Two or more rentals a year: an annual policy (~โ‚ฌ40โ€“80 once) beats even a single trip's desk waiver.

The one scenario where the desk waiver wins: you want zero deposit hold and zero paperwork if something happens, and you're willing to pay roughly 4โ€“6ร— for that convenience. That's a legitimate choice โ€” just make it knowingly, not at the counter under pressure.

What people get wrong

Standalone insurance does not remove the deposit โ€” the rental company still holds the excess on your card. The insurance means you get the money back if they charge it.

"The desk said my outside policy doesn't count." It doesn't need to count with them โ€” it's a contract between you and your insurer. Decline their waiver calmly; the policy pays you regardless of what the desk accepts.

Buy before you travel, not at the counter โ€” policies bought after pickup generally can't cover that rental.

Never pay a surprise damage charge again

Standalone excess insurance refunds what the rental desk charges you โ€” damage, tyres, windscreen, admin fees โ€” for a fraction of the desk's own waiver price.
